Achieving the correct ratio of alkalinity to acidity in the body is crucial to wellbeing. Generally speaking the body has this pretty much under control, however lifestyle choices such as diet, can still have an impact the pH level in our body.
Typically the average modern diet now consists of more acid forming foods. Highly processed meats, grains, alcohol and sugars increase the acidity in the body which may create an environment that is more susceptible to disease and chronic health conditions.
There are however some very simple day to day choices we can make to ensure we are helping the body to balance pH correctly:
- Lemon Kick:

Sugar is very acidic, especially highly processed sugars. Look for more natural alternatives as replacements. Sugar can be hidden in products to make them seem tastier such as sauces and marinades, so read labels to be sure what your eating isn’t laden with acid forming sugar!
- Meatless Mondays!
Think about swapping red meats for protein rich alkalising legumes such as chickpeas and lentils. Reducing the consumption of meats and dairy may help to reduce acidity in the body.
- Skip the sodas!
Not only do soft drinks contain extremely high levels of acidic forming sugars, but there are suggestions that the phosphorus in these drinks could leach much needed nutrients from the bones. Replace soda with pure water flavoured with lemon and mint to improve alkalinity.
- Go Green!
Green vegetables and herbs are wonderfully alkalising and very easy to incorporate into your diet. Think baby spinach, parsley and kale to add to green salads and green smoothies.
