1. What are Krill?

Krill (Euphausia superba) are shrimp-like marine invertebrates. Krill oil is a natural source of Omega-3s DHA and EPA.

2. Does Krill oil contain Omega-3 DHA/EPA?

Yes Krill oil naturally contains Omega-3 DHA/EPA fatty acids, phospholipids and natural antioxidants like astaxanthin, which gives Krill oil the red colour.

4. How is Krill oil different from Fish oil?

One of the main differences between Krill oil and Fish oil, is that Krill oil contains phospholipids in addition to the Omegas. It is thought that these phospholipids are responsible for Krill oil’s bioefficiency, helping to facilitate the uptake of the Omega-3s into the cells. A preliminary study found that taking just 300mg of Krill oil (just one small capsule) per day, can start to help relieve arthritis symptoms after only 7-14 days. Another difference is that Krill oil contains natural antioxidants like astaxanthin, which gives Krill oil the red colour.

5. Why aren't the DHA/EPA levels listed on the product pack?

Scientific tests indicate, that even though Krill oil contains less DHA/EPA than in a standard Fish oil capsules, Krill oil is more bioefficient due to its phospholipid content. Phospholipids are thought to assist in facilitating the uptake of Krill oil’s Omega-3s (DHA/EPA) into cells and tissue. Therefore when selecting a Krill oil product you should review the total amount of Krill oil per capsule not the DHA/EPA content as you would traditionally have done so with Fish oil capsules.
As the DHA/EPA levels in a small Krill oil capsule are lower than in standard 1000mg Fish oil capsules, you cannot compare DHA/EPA levels across the two products. So to save confusion Bioglan has opted to not include these on our packaging, as the benefits lie in the total amount of Krill oil per capsule.

6. "No added Gluten " - Is the product Gluten Free?

There is no gluten added as part of the active formulation and its excipients. However capsules may come into contact with traces of Gluten from other products processed by the manufacturer.

7. Can people who are allergic to crustaceans take Krill oil?

No. Krill is derived from Krill which are a form of crustaceans, therefore this product is contra-indicated for people allergic to crustaceans.

8. Are there any preservatives added?

A small amount of natural vitamin E has been added as a natural preservative.

9. Does Krill oil contain Iodine?

Fish and crustaceans, including Krill and Krill oil, may contain small varying amounts of naturally occurring Iodine.

10. What are the capsules made from?

11. Is Krill oil tested for heavy metals?

Krill is caught from the pristine waters of the Antarctica and is a very small crustacean, therefore is highly unlikely to contain high levels of heavy metals.

15. Are we depleting the ocean of whale food?

Krill oil farming is not new and has been used for quite some time as fish food for fish farms. More recently several clinical trials have shown its health benefits of Krill oil for humans. Krill harvest is managed conscientiously in a sustainable way. The catching of Krill is monitored and only a specific quota is allowed to be harvested each year, to help ensure a sustainable Krill population for future generations of whales, fish and humans.
